Del Zamora - Biography

Del was born in Roswell, New Mexico and is the oldest of three children with two sisters. His family hails from what is now called Lincoln County in New Mexico. Both sides of his family date back to the 1500's, in this part of New Mexico. His great, great grandmother, Nestorita Lara was painted by Henrietta Wyeth when Nestorita was 114 years old. The painting hangs to this day, in the city museum in Roswell, New Mexico. Del's grandfather, Tircio Romero, helped build the roads and infrastructure of Lincoln County and also served as a member of the county's first school board. Del's grandmother, Mercedes Lara, was the first girl to ever graduate high school in Lincoln County. She graduated first, out of her all male classmates in the 1920's. Del was raised in Roswell, New Mexico, until the fifth grade. His mother, Maria, the youngest daughter of Tircio and Mercedes, moved Del and his two sisters to Albuquerque, New Mexico, in order to pursue her college education. She also raised her three children alone, after Del's father had abandoned the family, leaving them in Roswell alone.

Del's mother, Maria Romero Zamora received her B.A., cum laude from the University of New Mexico in Albuquerque. After graduating she moved the family to Northern California to further pursue a masters degree, which she received cum laude, at California State University at Sacramento. It was at this time, that Del went to live with his father in the San Francisco Bay area. He attended Alameda High School for a year. In his junior year, Del's father moved him to Los Angeles, California. They settled into the city of Hawthorne, where Del graduated from Leuzinger High School on the honor roll in the top 10 of his class.

While in his senior year at Leuzinger High School, Del attended night school at Control Data Institute, studying computer technology. Del received his AA degree in computer technology, graduating first in his class, before he graduated from high school. He had actually stayed at high school longer than he was required to, in order to play baseball for his high school team. For five years, Del worked in the computer industry, rising from technician, to support representative, to service manager, to salesman, to sales manager, to western regional marketing director. All of this occurred over a five-year period, during which Del longed to break into the show business industry. He would play music with different bands on the weekends and secretly plotted to become an actor, writer, director, producer, singer, musician, and composer, in the show business industry. His one true achievement during this time was to earn a black belt in Martial Arts. Del has studied Martial Arts for a total of 25 years and maintains his expertise.

After five years in the computer industry, that included a realization that he was aiding and abetting the government in making and promoting war, Del eventually left that industry to pursue show business. His family was dead set against this decision and still object to his career change, to this very day. He liquidated his stocks, sold his condo and luxury car and bought a Chevrolet Van. He then drove cross-country, with his dog, Chivo, to New York to study acting with Stella Adler. He studied Method Acting and also took classes in fencing, dance, speech and singing. After 14 months of intensive study, Del drove back to Los Angeles and proceeded to live in his van with Chivo, while he pursued an acting career. Doggedly determined to not work in any regular job, he pursued theater, student films and non-union films. None of these projects paid anything except an occasional meal, but Del was happy to be free from the rat race of society. During this time, Del did almost half of his 78 student films. Most of these student films were at USC, AFI, LACC or UCLA. It was during this time that Del first met director Alex Cox at a student film audition for REPO MAN at UCLA in 1982. Del had been attending UCLA and had just been accepted to the 1983-84, motion picture/television program as a writer/director. At that audition, Del immediately knew that Alex Cox was not your average filmmaker and was excited by the prospect of working with such an enthusiastic and original director. Del was informed by Alex Cox, a year after the initial audition, that he was being cast as Lagarto Rodriguez in REPO MAN. Del at first assumed that REPO MAN was still going to be a student film and was completely surprised when Alex Cox told him that it was a Universal Picture. Del was excited but felt conflicted, because the shoot schedule was going to coincide with his finals. Del's counselor at UCLA, advised him to withdraw from classes and return after he finished filming. His counselor told him that many people came to UCLA to get this type of professional opportunity and that if he did not take the role, he might regret it later. You can always return to school at a later date was the mantra of his counselor. So, Del withdrew from classes at UCLA to concentrate full time on the character of Lagarto Rodriguez in REPO MAN.

After shooting REPO MAN with director Alex Cox, Del continued to live in his van for another two years. Impressed with his work in REPO MAN, the producers of ROBOCOP cast him as a working class cop. Del acted in ROBOCOP for director Paul Verhoeven and producer Jon Davison while at the same time acting in STRAIGHT TO HELL for director Alex Cox, wherein he played a federale. Del flew back and forth from Almeria, Spain and Dallas, Texas, several times during the shoots of these two films. Very heady days. Del then shot WALKER in Nicaragua for director Alex Cox and BORN IN EAST LA for director Cheech Marin in Tijuana, Mexico and East Los Angeles, California. He shot these films at the same time, flying back and forth from Nicaragua to Los Angeles and Mexico, several times. Very heady days, indeed. With the income from these films, Del finally moved out of his van and into an apartment with his dog, Chivo.

Del has worked eight times with director Alex Cox and twice with producer Jon Davison. He considers them good friends as well as collaborators in the movies that they have made together. Del's career spans all disciplines. A very versatile performer by necessity, Del has appeared in action films, cult films, comedies, dramas, sitcoms, soap operas, avant garde films, Spanish language films, Spanish language television, American episodic television, Shakespearean theatre, musical theatre, farcical theatre, commedia del ‘arte and many others, too numerous to enumerate. Known as equally adept at comedy and drama, Del is a true chameleon and is often thought of as playing himself, even though none of his characters resemble each other.

One of Del's proudest moments was when he first saw Alex Cox's feature film, EL PATRULLERO. Del wrote some additional score for that film and was thrilled to hear his creation meshed with the compelling images on-screen.

Del is an avid sportsman who loves the outdoors. He is an avid runner, hiker, cross-country skier, salt and fresh water fisherman, bicyclist, swimmer and all around active guy. He has completed four marathons and one triathlon and plans on doing more of both. Still active in the Martial Arts, Del plans on a long and healthy life. His genetics show that much of his family lives well into their 90's.

Del is also an accomplished writer/director. He has written many well-received scripts that have made it to the semi-finals in many scriptwriting contests. A few of these scripts have been optioned. During his 26 years in the business, Del has also directed several award winning short films and theatre plays. Del also directed the cable pilot, CHANNEL ZERO for Zero Upstairs Productions and Pocho Productions. Del is co-owner of Pocho Magazine and Pocho Productions. One of his partners at Pocho Productions is Lalo Lopez Alcaraz, the cartoonist for the syndicated cartoon LA CUCARACHA.

Del's film credits include:
SEARCHERS 2.0, REPO MAN, WALKER, STRAIGHT TO HELL, SID & NANCY, THE WINNER and BACK TO HELL, all for director Alex Cox. Other credits include TORTILLA HEAVEN, THE SUBSTANCE OF THINGS HOPED FOR, EXPIRED, NORMALITY, DISHDOGZ, BLACKWATER VALLEY EXORCISM, VIRGINIA, NEVER TRUST A SERIAL KILLER, THE KING OF L.A., THE OUTFITTERS, TOWN & COUNTRY, SEARCH FOR A HOMELESS MAN, NORTH BY EL NORTE, EL LUCHADOR CHICANO, MAN'S BEST FRIEND, BORN IN EAST LA, ROBOCOP, FACE OFF, THE BLUE IGUANA, FLOUNDERING, THE RIVER BOTTOM, PVLA UNMASKED!, LADYKILLERS, TEQUILA SUNRISE, THE FABULOUS BAKER BOYS, WACKY ADVENTURES, THE PERFECT BRIDE, UNDERCOVER, GHETTOBLASTER, THE POW WOW HIGHWAY, WHITE MEN CAN'T JUMP, AND THE EARTH DID NOT SWALLOW HIM, DURANGO KIDS, ROADSIDE PROPHETS, WORTH WINNING, HEAT STREET, FRESH KILL, KICKS, RAPID FIRE, PRIVATE INVESTIGATIONS, STEPHEN KING'S NIGHT OF THE CROW, KILLING TIME, MY SWEET KILLER, STAND ALONE, AMERICAN JUSTICE, BENNY THE MUTE, SHORT CHANGED, GANGZTAS, HELL SQUAD, PRIVATE SCHOOL, DANCE OF THE DWARFS, THE STATUE OF SURPRISE and HOLLYWOOD FOLLIES.

Del has recently co-written a play titled, 99cent Massacre, which will be read publicly for the first time at the Ricardo Montalban Theater in the spring of 2007. He will direct this reading.

It must also be noted that Del has written several op-ed articles for the LA Times, LA Weekly and numerous other newspapers and journals. Del and his partners hold the trademarks to POCHO MAGAZINE, POCHOVISION, ALL POCHO NETWORK, POCHO NEWS NETWORK and POCHO PRODUCTIONS.

Del’s latest starring role in Searchers 2.0, for writer/director Alex Cox, had its World Premiere at the Venice Film Festival in Venice, Italy in September 2007. Searchers 2.0 then had it’s US premiere at AFI Fest in Los Angeles in November, followed by the South American Premiere at the Cero Latitud Festival de Cine in Quito, Ecuador. Del attended all 3 festivals. Photos of Del Zamora on the Red Carpet at all of these festivals can be found on the internet by googling Venice Film Festival Del Zamora and AFI Fest Del Zamora or by searching on Getty Images.com or wiredimages.com. Next up for Searchers 2.0, are screenings at Lincoln Center in New York, where it will be the closing night screening; and the Independent Film Festival in Washington D.C., where it will be the opening night screening. For more info on screenings to come both in the US and internationally, look up www.searchers2.com, where you can stream a scene, look at photos and find out the latest on Searchers 2.0.

Projects Currently In Development (Title, Film/Television, Status, Budget)
The Last Brown Beret (Page 1) Project Status Statement

• This project has actors Robert Beltran (Star Trek Voyager - series regular 7 years, Bugsy, Eating Raoul), Miguel Sandoval (Medium - series regular 4 years, Get Shorty, Clear and Present Danger, Repo Man), Del Zamora (Searchers 2.0, Never Trust A Serial Killer, The Outfitters, Repo Man) and Jesse Borrego (24 - series regular 1 year, Mi Vida Loca, Fame - series regular 3 years) attached and committed to shoot upon clearing of schedules and final financing.

• Directors of Photography committed are Tom Richmond (Palindromes, Night Mother, Little Odessa, I'm Gonna Git You Sucka, Stand and Deliver), or Steve Fierberg (Searchers 2.0, Entourage - series Director of Photography 3 years, Secretary). Available schedules will dictate who the D.P. is. I have worked with both of these fine directors of photography in the past, and they are both deeply committed to this project.

• Production Designer is Cecilia Montiel (Zorro I, Zorro II, The Winner). The Production Design is complete and was done by Ms. Montiel on deferment. Very nice of her to do so.

• Producer is Todd Darling (The Smart Show, A Snow Mobile for George, Laguna Beach, Savior of the Forest).

• Screenplay has made it to quarterfinals of several screenplay competitions. Screenplay is based on award winning play that toured the country from 1993-1999. Some of the venues include SRO performances at Yale, Amherst, Notre Dame, Northwestern, De Paul, Univ. of Texas, UCLA, USC, Fresno State, and UNLV amongst numerous others. List available upon request.

• Play was performed 3 times at the Smithsonian Institute in Washington D.C. to SRO standing ovation audiences. After the last performance, a Brown Beret that was used as a prop in the play was inducted into the Smithsonian's permanent collection of Chicano Movimiento artifacts.

The Last Brown Beret (Page 2)

• Major SRO venues across the country include Denver's Paramount Theater, Phoenix's Orpheum Theater, San Antonio's Guadalupe Cultural Arts Center, Albuquerque's Wool Factory Theater, Chicago's Grand Theater, San Francisco's Castro District Theater, Hollywood's Nosotros Theater, East L.A.'s Plaza de la Raza Theater amongst numerous others. List available upon request.

• Project can be shot for a very low budget as 70% of the story takes place in one location. Project is also well respected in the Latino communities and will be supported by these same communities throughout production as well as at the box office. Lou Pizarro, the creator and producer of Operacion Repo, has donated a warehouse in which we can construct our set for the garage that serves as the centerpiece of our story. It is the hub of our story and a character in the story itself. Very nice of him to do so.

• Project has a long shelf life as all universities and high schools across the country will desire to have the DVD's, etc. of this movie in their libraries. This project is very much like "Stand and Deliver", which still has a strong shelf life to this very day. This is due to both of these projects historical significance.

• Anhauser Busch will augment the budget for this production, as their product is featured in the storyline in an organic manner. Other products can also provide product placement possibilities.

• Finally, it should be said that the real protagonists of our story, namely the Brown Berets and all involved with the Chicano Movimiento, are still alive and kicking. This project is a tribute, homage and a valentine to all of them. Much of what we Latinos have in our lives. Much of the progress made by Latinos in the USA. Much of the progress in the understanding and acceptance of Latinos by America in general. All of these and much more were struggled and fought for, by the Brown Berets and the Chicano Movimiento.

The Last Brown Beret (Page 3)

• Project can be shot on any Digital format, 35 mm, Super 16 mm or 16 mm.

• All involved with this project consider it a "labor of love". All who have worked on this project, or will work on this project, do so at a much lower pay rate than they normally make. All of the actors will be paid $100.00 per day, as per the SAG Ultra Low Budget Contract. Very nice of them to do so. Thank you for your consideration and let's do this most worthy project.

4 Chicanos who were Brown Beret radical activists in the late 60's, reunite for the funeral of one of their fellow Brown Beret activists. They then agree to meet in their old meeting place where they recall their radical days and what has changed and not changed since. A drama with frequent hilarious moments that shows a seldom seen side of the Chicano/Mexican-American story. Chicano history is American history.
Favorites (Film, Director, Television, Actors, Musicians, etc.)

Dreams & Goals
I am strongly identified as an excellent actor, which I appreciate. In fact, I am also an excellent writer/director and a detail oriented producer. My dream is to be able to exercise these underused creative muscles. I am more than an actor and that has been difficult for most people to believe. I look forward to getting my first feature as director, ("The Last Brown Beret") produced and released to an audience as soon as possible. I am more than ready.

My movie, REPO CHICK, will have its WORLD PREMIERE at this year's Venice Film Festival in Italy on September 8, 2009!

I star in REPO CHICK, a feature film that will have its World Premiere at this year's Venice Film Festival in Venice, Italy on September 8, 2009. REPO CHICK is the long anticipated quasi-sequel to the cult hit, REPO MAN, which I also starred in back in 1984, when it was released as a Universal Picture. Alex Cox, who wrote and directed REPO MAN is also the writer/director of REPO CHICK. Executive Producer is the legendary David Lynch. Just got cast in a small role in the television series, "Medium", for CBS.

Just got notice that I am working tomorrow, in a small speaking role with the wonderful actor, Patricia Arquette. It is my 168th principal union job. How sad, that with all this work, I have only averaged 15k a year. I have worked for all the major studios and networks, as well as indies. The industry does not pay Latinos, what they pay the Anglo actors. I compare Social Security statements with my Anglo acting peers, and they find it hard to believe. They work less than half of the jobs I do, a… Continue

You live films? And here I am just creating music .. living loving dreaming..dreaming of getting the music I make onto film soundtrack... now, I start to wonder if DEl.. who is the man who lives films ..may wish to gesture to me .... "thata way... just a pointer .... that would be very special and of value to me.. and maybe eventually to an audience who hears my music one day as they are absorbed in the big screen. ".
