Just got notice that I am working tomorrow, in a small speaking role with the wonderful actor, Patricia Arquette. It is my 168th principal union job. How sad, that with all this work, I have only averaged 15k a year. I have worked for all the major studios and networks, as well as indies. The industry does not pay Latinos, what they pay the Anglo actors. I compare Social Security statements with my Anglo acting peers, and they find it hard to believe. They work less than half of the jobs I do, and make 10 times the amount of money that I make.
Lead roles are what get the most money. Unfortunately for us Latino actors, when there are Latino lead roles, they almost always go to non-Latinos (ie: House of Spirits, The Perez Family, Evita, Scarface, Tortilla Flats, etc., ad nauseum). Thus, our low wages. Sure we get one in, now and then, however it is almost always, one role out of hundreds. There have been well over 3,500 times that a non-Latino has portrayed Latinos in major roles in movies and television. We Latinos, have only played non-Latinos in 38 roles. That's right, 38 times, to over 3,500 times. If Anglos look like us, don't we look like them? The theoretical 2-way street does not exist for us Latinos. Oh well, I am still grateful for the job, no matter the size of the role. Thanks, Miguel Sandoval, for putting in a good word.
